BLOGMAS: SECULARIZATION OF CHRISTMAS, ARE YOU BOTHERED?
Secularization refers
to the historical process in which religion loses social and cultural
significance.
Hello, lovelies!
So it’s the early hours of
Christmas day and while I'm thinking of the Chicken and orisirisi that
I’m hopefully going to be having today, a topic popped up in my mind. It’s
Christmas season and a majority of individuals have put in and are still
putting in a lot of preparations towards the celebration. Now the question is
what kind of celebrations are we looking forward to? Are the celebrations still
in line with the entire purpose of Christmas?
The secularization of this holiday
actually bothers me. Most people, Christians included, do not understand the
true meaning of Christmas hence the method of celebration that goes with it.
The true essence has been lost to merely the expectancy of gifts and basically
just making merry. Surely giving and receiving gifts are important parts of it
seeing as Jesus Christ our greatest gift was given to us. Then again, we are drifting
apart slowly from the actual essence.
I hear of Christmas parties
thrown in the most secular way. I am definitely not judging for partying and
having fun in the way they like but clipping this under Christmas is an issue.
Back home, there are masquerade displays under the “Christmas celebration” tag.
None of these portray anything “Christmas-y” yet they bear the tag. Fetish
displays in the most fetish regalia are surely not significances of the birth
of Christ. Some of them even come up to you to extort money from you in the
name of “do Christmas for me”. Some business owners have seen this
as an opportunity to make the final money before the year runs out. Prices are
hiked ridiculously all in the bid to make final sales. This here is almost the
entire opposite of the season. It’s the season of love but are you really
showing love by doing that?
Personally, I feel this issue of
secularization has become so widespread that it is really not seen as one
anymore. There’s a deeper meaning to Christmas celebration but we definitely
won’t go about shoving it down people’s throats just because we know it. Jesus
is the reason for the season and if that’s not the reason for your celebration
then what is?
Tell me in the comment section,
what do you think?
Merry Christmas guys! Be sure to
show love to people around you this season and of course, always.
